Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center thought it had an outbreak of whooping cough.  Nearly 1,000 staff members were given a PCR test.  142 of them came back positive.

Later, more definitive testing was done.  Not a single case of whooping cough was confirmed with the definitive test. Instead, it appears that the staff probably had ordinary respiratory diseases such as the common cold.

Of course, that leads to the question of why rely on them at all. “At face value, obviously they shouldn’t be doing it,” Dr. Perl said. But, she said, often when answers are needed and an organism like the pertussis bacterium is finicky and hard to grow in a laboratory, “you don’t have great options.”

If flu stats are significantly down, it may be because the COVID-19 test also detects the flu. A positive result of this test is more than likely recorded as COVID-19 when the person actually has the flu.

As of May 1, 2021, CDC transitioned from monitoring all reported vaccine breakthrough cases to focus on identifying and investigating only hospitalized or fatal cases…

The following is the new standard for testing breakthrough cases:

For cases with a known RT-PCR cycle threshold (Ct) value, submit only specimens with Ct value ≤28 to CDC for sequencing. (Sequencing is not feasible with higher Ct values.)

Previously,  if a positive signal wasn’t seen after 37 to 40 cycles, the test was negative.  Each cycle increases the rate of a false positive.  So what was done here is that they dialing down the rate of false positive for these breakthrough cases.
